Introduction to Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom

A Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom is a room in which the fresh air is mixed with the room air and removes airborne contamination generated by machinery and people. Non-unidirectional airflow cleanrooms use turbulent airflow systems to clean particulate air and uphold a clean and hygienic environment. It arises when there is an irregularity like a disruption in the surface across which the fluid is flowing, which alters the direction of movement. Turbulent flow displays a flat velocity profile.

Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom uses both laminar airflow hoods and nonspecific velocity filters to keep the air in a cleanroom in continuous motion. The irregular air seeks to trap particles and drive them towards the floor, where they enter filters and leave the cleanroom atmosphere. The air in the cleanroom goes through the HVAC system, is cleansed and flows back into the room. Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom keeps air in motion, though not in the same direction, by using both laminar airflow hoods and nonspecific velocity filters.

Working of Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom

In the case of Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom, a vortex air flow is introduced that mixes with interior air. Therefore, the input air mixes with that in the room reducing the suspended particles. The air therefore crosses the internal volumes of the Clean Room, exits from the wall air intake grills and is filtered again for a new sequence.

Types of Turbulently Ventilated Cleanroom

Turbulent flow is used in atmospheres between the ISO 9 and ISO 6 classes. In order to pass from one ISO class to the next, it is essential to interfere on filter quantity. This means that fewer filters are used in a class ISO 9 Clean Room compared to a class ISO 6 room. However, two different groups must be distinguished: group ISO 7/ISO 6 and group ISO 9/ISO 8.

  1. Class ISO7/ISO6 turbulent flow Clean Rooms
    In this case, filtering modules are positioned in end positions. Air is delivered through grids placed on the lower part of the walls.
  1. Class ISO9/ISO8 turbulent flow Clean Rooms
    As for Class ISO 9 and ISO 8 Clean Rooms, the entire filters can be placed directly inside the centralised Ventilation Units, i.e. remotely, or directly on the suspended ceiling of the Clean Room, i.e. end position. Air is delivered through grids placed on the lower part of the walls or on the ceiling.
